How conflict statuses are computed
Every tracked conflict is re-evaluated automatically on each full analysis cycle. Recorded events from the last 30 days are compared against the previous 30-day window: a rise of 25% or more marks a conflict ESCALATING, a fall of 25% or more marks it COOLING, and everything in between holds ACTIVE. Casualty figures come from the same event-level records. No number on this page is written by hand.
When event-level data is unavailable, the tracker falls back to global coverage monitoring and clearly flags reduced precision rather than inventing figures.
Roster lifecycle
tracked from our own corpus since 2026-09-17How it works. Each conflict is recognised in our news corpus by its own terms. Trend compares the last 30 days of coverage with the 30 before. No real activity for 30 days marks a conflict dormant; 120 days retires it. New conflicts are surfaced as candidates and added only after human review.

How the conflict roster works
One list, kept honest by the news. Every conflict on this page is tracked by our own engine. It counts how often each one appears in 41 public feeds, how many of those stories are violent, and whether coverage is rising or falling against the previous 30 days.
What the columns mean. Headlines 30d is the number of stories mentioning the conflict in the last month. Last activity is the most recent day it appeared. Status follows a fixed lifecycle: escalating when coverage runs 25% above its prior month, cooling when it runs 25% below, dormant after 30 quiet days, retired after 120.
